Matthew Klotz Smashes World Record in the Men’s 50 Back

Team USA Swimming  Gets Off to a Strong Start on Day One of the 2017 Deaflympics

The first day of the 2017 Deaflympics was packed with best times from Team USA.  Preliminary races in the morning started off with the Mixed 400 Free Relay Team of Matthew Zou, Emily Massengale, Elizabeth Cocker, and Matthew Klotz qualifying third for the Mixed Relay finals with a time of 3:55.31.  In finals, Matthew Hopkins, Elizabeth Cocker, Alyssa Greymont, and Matthew Klotz placed 5th with a time of 3:52.

In the second event,  the Men’s 400 Free, Matthew Hopkins swam a time of 4:29.87 to place 13th, and Tyler Brown swam a new personal best time of 4:47.37 for 18th place.

In the third event, Emily Massengale and Alyssa Greymont qualified 5th and 6th for finals in the Women’s 200 Free with times of 2:16.07 and 2:16.13 respectively. That represented a best time for Massengale by over 3.59 seconds. Swimming in lane 1 right next to Emily Massengale, Elizabeth Cocker was close behind them in 10th place with a time of 2:17.89, a personal best for her as well. In finals, Massengale placed 5th overall with a new best time of 2:14.57; and Greymont placed 7th with a time of 2:16.12.

Matthew Klotz qualified for finals in the Men’s 50 Back with a prelims time of 27.34, recovering quickly after a slow start off the wall when the backstroke ledge slipped on the take off.  Matthew did more than recover; Klotz smashed the World Record and American Record with a winning time of 26.26, winning the first gold medal of the games for Team USA.

Molly Likins, the current American Record holder in the 50 breast,  qualified for finals in the Women’s 50 Breast with a prelims time of 34.76. She then improved on that time in finals to swim a new American Record of 34.32 to place 5th in that event.

In the final event of the morning, 800 Freestyle, Alyssa Greymont led the entire heat with a strong time of 9:44.68 to place second and qualify for finals which will be held on July 21st.

The Women’s 400 Medley Relay swam in the evening session since there was just one heat; and the relay team of Massengale, Likins, Cocker, and Greymont swam to 4th place with a time of 4:35.37.
